About Me
I’m Steph, and I’m an editor and proofreader based in Northamptonshire. From the minute I could hold a book I knew that reading was going to be my thing, and after graduating with a degree in English Literature in 2014, I decided it was time to put my love of the written word to good use. I’ve worked in the publishing industry since 2016 and one of my favourite things is working closely with authors as they navigate their publishing journey. After completing some initial training with The Writers’ Bureau, I am now CIEP accredited and am continuing my professional development with them.
When I don’t have my head in a book, you’ll usually find me spending time outside, swimming, cooking, or heading out for a coffee.
I look forward to working with you!

Services
A proofread is a final check before a book is printed. It usually happens once a manuscript has undergone a developmental edit or copy edit, and has been typeset and laid out for printing.
A proofread will look for any remaining errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation, but will also look for any errors that may have been introduced during the typesetting process. This could be spotting typos and formatting inconsistencies, as well as things like ensuring that page numbers in the contents page are correct and any references between chapters match up.
What a proofread won't do is look out for errors or issues with:
- Consistency
- Clarity
- Repetition
- Flow
- The structure or plot of your book as a whole
While a proofreader will likely flag if there’s something in your book that really doesn’t make sense, or something they know at first glance is factually incorrect, they won’t be actively fact-checking your work or offering too much of their advice or opinion.
I’ll be offering copy editing services in the not-too-distant future, so be sure to check back to find out more!
Having just completed editing my first-ever book, I was looking for a proofreader, preferably local, to check my manuscript before sending to print.
Luckily, Stephanie was in the process of setting up her enterprise. Even luckier, she was based in my neighbourhood and was able to apply her local knowledge to the script in addition to her not inconsiderable proofreading skills.
I was delighted with the final edit. Stephanie had carefully marked all the corrections and supplied me with a list of suggestions to enhance the read. I can’t thank her enough for her time and care and would have no hesitation in recommending her services.

Rates
My rates are based on the CIEP’s recommended minimum rates which can be found here, however I assess each project on a bespoke basis and will discuss everything with you before we begin. I would require a 20% non-refundable deposit to be paid upfront, with the balance due on completion.
I would also carry out a proofread of a small sample of your work free of charge before you commit – this not only enables me to get a more accurate idea of how long it will take me to proofread the entire work (and therefore give you the fairest price possible) but also gives you the opportunity to see how I work before we begin.
